Having been established by UNESCO, United nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in 1997, OCCAM was born in the framework of the United Nations. Since 2003, the observatory is affiliated to the United Nations through its Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) – which gathers the acting agencies of the UN – and the Department of Public Information (UN-DPI). OCCAM is also member of the UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development (UN-GAID), which gathers the main organizations and companies that try to promote development through new technologies. On the basis of the mandate received by the UN-GAID, OCCAM is leading the Community of Expertise “e-services for development”, whose members include the world leaders in this fields. In this framework OCCAM has created the global platform for the digital services that is able to provide broadband satellite connectivity to remote communities at low cost.
Since 2001, OCCAM has been active in the UN framework, thanks to the organization of the Infopoverty World Conference, that takes place at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Moreover, since its foundation, OCCAM has been strongly supported by the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations.
